When a city loses its Watchmaker, there has to be another one coming instead. When Arthur Wright dies, to Gemitus arrives newly assigned Watchmaker - Asenath Price. She's the very opposite from her predecessor; aloof, not really extroverted, reluctant to show herself among people, suffering from a mysterious disease nobody knows about. The mayor is not very satisfied with the Watchmakers Council's choice of their new citizen, and decides to do whatever it takes to get rid of her.
Between a new place, her disease, and very cold welcome in Gemitus, Asenath finds herself in a very difficult position. Luckily, there's a person who comes to her rescue... and, surprisingly enough, she's not the only one.
