Wasted (Thriller)

The engine of the rusted pickup hummed softly, blending with the rhythmic chirp of crickets in the surrounding woods. The clock on the dashboard blinked 1:32 AM, but Logan wasn't looking at it. His eyes were fixed on the rearview mirror, where the faint outline of something-or someone-seemed to flicker in and out of the shadows.

He gripped the steering wheel tighter, the ache in his knuckles a welcome distraction from the pit forming in his stomach. The events of the night played in a loop in his mind: the bar, the fight, the flash of a knife. He couldn't remember how it ended, only that he had woken up on the dirt road, his shirt soaked in something warm and sticky.

The passenger seat was empty now, but it hadn't been when he started driving.

Logan glanced down at the dashboard, and his stomach churned. The fuel gauge needle was buried in E, even though he'd just filled the tank hours earlier. The pickup sputtered and coasted to a stop.

Silence.

He reached for his phone, but the screen was cracked and dead. His surroundings felt too quiet, like the woods themselves were holding their breath.

Then came the tapping-a slow, deliberate knock on the driver's side window. Logan's blood turned to ice. He turned his head, expecting to see nothing but the trees.

Instead, he saw his own reflection-his own face-staring back at him. But the reflection wasn't smiling.

It was grinning.
