This book gives a different viewpoint of the Civil War than does many other books written for young adults.Not only does it tell about the war from a young girls viewpoint, but is contains a certain amount of mystery as the war unfolds. Madeline and a young freed slave become familiar with the Underground Railroad and help slaves excape as her father and brothers fight in the war. Madeline displays bravery as she delivers an important message passed to her by a spy.
