Twenty years have passed since the birth of their daughter, Annie. Bader Ruth attacks Freta at their home while Annie and Andy are in town to pick up an anniversary present for her. Freta reaches out to them as hell hounds surround her.When they step through a way to their home they find Freta mortally wounded. Annie kills the hell hounds and defeats Bader Ruth. On fire with his face a ruin he escapes screaming through his own way. Before Freta passes from life the unicorn offers her a means of circumventing death and she takes it so she can stay with Andy and her daughter.Annie, Freta (now Wolf), Peatri and Andy set out to find and put an end to Bader Ruth who has made it clear he will never leave them in peace. They find him in league with the Norse gods of chaos. Andy goes to the Land of the Dark Elves, Nidavellir, to have them fashion a staff allowing him to defeat the giants of Utgard.The elves will only make the staff if he brings them the ear of Heimdall buried beneath the World Tree. He leaves Wolf, Peatri and Annie as bond so they will make the staff for him now and release his family only when they have possession of the ear. Andy agrees and despite how it might seem, Andy has a backup plan.Andy's quest takes him to the World Tree, to Asgard, and deep in the caverns of Montana then finally back to Nidavellir. By the end of the quest he has earned the respect of Odin, Thor and Freya and is changed by the unicorn and the dragon, Deminstrel, into a much different being.
