Wake Up House!

This book entertains and amuses my two and a half year old daughter more than just about any other book in her substantial "library." We read it at night, before bed (perhaps it should be called "Go To Sleep House!" because the book ends with the house going to sleep). The short poems are fun to read and fun to listen to. The illustrations are three-dimensional and fascinating to look at over and over again. They personalize the house and its contents in a unique way that gives them character and substance without being the least bit precious. It's great entertainment!

Fun to read, even more fun to look at

My 20 month-old loves this book! She has me read it over andover and over. She loves the rhyming and the vivid, unique threedimensional illustrations. I highly recommend it, even if your childis younger than the recommended age.

Wake Up House ...Wakes Up Your Eyes and Ears!

A feast for eye and ear awaits readers of this book. Through clever personification, the most ordinary items in a house come to life. The night-light, the drapes, the screen door, and the feather duster all take on characteristics that are sure to make young and old smile. Even the stairs become the back of a stretching stegosaurous. Don Carter's creations (they are much more than traditional illustration) not only bring off-the-page dimension to the eye, but a sense of familiarity and comfort to the verse. The lamp is one you've probably got in your house; the couch, indeed, looks like a "friendly chap with a big soft lap." As a teacher, I will use this book with my young students for all manner of language arts. As a parent, I will enjoy sharing these poems as we go through our day.

A Bright and Cheery Book for Preschoolers

This book of little poems is a delight to share with a young child. The poems deal with things commonly found around the house-the tub, the night-light, the vacuum cleaner, etc. The wonderful illustrations in vibrant colors act to personify many of these inanimate objects, as well as relect accurately the tenor of the poems.
