With Christmas fast approaching it's time to think about holiday deserts again and that's where this book comes in, because even though the title is "wacky cakes & kooky cookies" the cakes and cookies you'll learn to make between its pages aren't really so wacky. Of course, there are some very nice cake and cookie recipes in this book, most notably the chocolate velvet cake on page 62, but this book is more about tasty desserts, though these cookies and cakes are all very tasty, this book is about how to decorate for not only the holidays, but for any occasion. In no time at all Mr. Jenne will have you as familiar with the techniques of professional cookie decorating as you are with the contents of your kitchen cabinets. If you're the kind of person who knows where everything is in her kitchen, you'll have no problems with these techniques, on the other hand, if you haven't a clue as to where anything is, then you just might be the kind of person who might fumble around a bit with these techniques, but even if you're that kind of person, if you follow the directions, you'll be alright. I've only had this book a short while, as it was a Thanksgiving gift from Hubby Dub, but I've learned quite a bit from it. This is another keeper for me. Review submitted by Captain Katie Osborne
Wacky Cakes

You don't need much in the way of experience or talent to transform a simple cake into a creative masterpiece. According to virtuoso pastry chef Gerhard Jenne, "you just need a sense of humor and a steady hand." In Wacky Cakes & Kooky Cookies, Jenne virtually transforms cake decorating from a fusty old chore that many bakers have abandoned, into a pursuit that is both fun and a real outlet for creative expression, The results are gorgeous.
This book makes a great gift.

I stumbled upon this book in my public library but am looking for a copy for myself. Jenne's base recipes are great no-fail recipes and earned me rave reviews at work when I turned up with shortbread and then the chocolate sponge and ganache. The technique is simple using parchment paper rather than lots of fancy equipment. My attempt at the sunflower cookies was a great hit and was fun. And having fun is the spirit of the whole enterprise.
Beautiful and Practical, Too

Like Creative Cookies by Toba Garrett this is a beautiful book suitable for display on the coffee table. Unlike Garrett's book, this one tempts me to actually try making some of the cookies and cakes! The ideas in Wacky Cakes aren't necessarily simple to execute, but there is a sense of proportion here. We are only talking food, after all. How much time do you really want to spend making a single cookie? This is about half the price of the Garrett book, too. A good value.
