Wabi Sabi Painting with Cold Wax: Adding Body, Texture and Transparency to Your Art

The ancient philosophy of wabi-sabi honors the imperfect, the transitory and the humble. Cold wax is a perfect vehicle for artists wishing to explore this aesthetic. In this guide, you'll learn how to use this incredibly malleable medium--in combination with oil paint and other mediums--to add layers of texture, atmosphere, depth and meaning to your paintings while developing a more intuitive artistic voice.

No matter what your experience level, learning to paint with cold wax will help you approach your work with confidence and a sense of adventure. You will learn a liberating process of texturing, layering, building up and scraping back to create a fascinating "history of surface." Each piece will be the result of elements converging in a one-time-only way, resulting in fiercely original abstract paintings honoring your own process of self discovery.

Wabi-Sabi is a practical and informative book.

I bought this book to help me prepare a presentation on CWM painting, and it came through. This lovely four-color book is well written with excellent photographs and explanatory pages. Barton interjects humor here and there and explains some issues that are probably common with cold wax artists. In 12 chapters, she addresses fears we have when addressing the blank canvas using cold wax and provides practical ways to combat these bug-a-boos. She also presents 12 "Guest Artists" in each chapter. The artist tells in their own words about their artistic development and style. One of their paintings is presented with a short description written by the artist. Along with the text, Barton gives examples of "how to" cold wax steps and methods. The book flows well. Not only does it take you from A to Z, but it gives you the philosophy, methodology and creativity of cold wax medium painting. Wabi-Sabi Painting with Cold Wax is an excellent addition to my Art Library.
