Voyagers!

This book is a nicely written adaptation of the pilot episode from the short-lived 1982-83 tv program, "Voyagers!" The premise: A mysterious group of time travelers known as the "Voyagers" continually leap through time to correct world history to make sure that historical events happen as they were supposed to. A Voyager's tools: the time travel device known as the "omni," and a guidebook (literally, a world history book). On one fateful night, Voyager Phineas Bogg, while thinking he will land in 1492 to aid Christopher Columbus, actually ends up in New York of 1982, where he encounters young orphan Jeffrey Jones. Within moments, in order to save Jeffrey's life after he falls from a skyscraper window, Bogg is forced to leave his guidebook behind and rescues him using the "omni," which sends them both back to the era of Moses. After Jeffrey assists him in sending infant Moses on his intended route down the Nile, Bogg discovers that the "omni" won't let him return Jeffrey to his own time period. The benefit to Bogg, however, is that Jeffrey has the historical knowledge and insight that Bogg lacks without his guidebook. There the adventure begins .... The author is faithful to the program's intent of introducing pre-teens to the wonders of history using time travel. Further, the book illustrates to its audience the concept of how historical events tend to have a significant cause-and-effect relationship. For example, the story supposes: What if the Wright Brothers had not invented the airplane first? As a result, would the U.S. have lost World War I? Read the story for the answer. The story also leaves the door open for what future adventures are still to come for heroic time travelers Phineas Bogg and Jeffrey Jones. I certainly recommend this book for children ages 7 - 12.
