American History in Song, Something to Sing About

American history embedded in song is truly something to sing about; especially for children. This book has been published in response to a question so many of my students regularly asked over my years as a classroom teacher, ?Ms. Gilray, can we sing a song today?? It sounds so simple, but regulations governing classroom instruction today require that songs fit the curriculum. This collection of songs is standard based to help fulfill this requirement. Songs in this book are more than a hundred years old. They have been handed down, grandparent to parent, parent to child, family to family?for generations. I was fortunate to have learned most of these songs in my childhood. Though I did not realize the historic implications at the time, I knew I loved the way the songs bridged the generational divide to make me feel one with my elders. The goal of this book is to give all children ?something to sing about??a connection with past generations, the joy that comes with singing together, and a chance to carry forth the legacy left by people who shaped our nation in its early years.
