There are eight types of B vitamins, all of which play a vital role within the body. Many of the B vitamins are helpful in regulating how our body processes different nutrients, including carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They also play a role in maintaining the health of our nervous system, which includes the chemicals responsible for sending messages through the nervous system, as well as proper health and maintenance of the brain and spinal cord. B vitamins also play an extensive role in forming red blood cells, or erythrocytes. As with other vitamins, each B vitamin has two names. Colloquially, these vitamins are given the "B" designation followed by a number to differentiate it from other vitamins in the B complex family: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12. They also each have a chemical name. Vitamin B1 is thiamin, B2 is riboflavin, B3 is niacin, and B5 is pantothenic acid. Vitamin B6 is pyridoxine, B7 is biotin, B9 is folic acid, and B12 is cyanocobalamin. The included chart gives a brief overview of the function of each of the B vitamins. As you can probably determine, the B vitamins all play different but closely related roles within the human body. Although I will not be able to touch on the complexities of each of the B vitamins in this book, I will focus on a few of the vitamins that play a particular role with vitamin B6 within the human body. For the remainder of this book, I will be focusing on vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is an essential vitamin and is a group of 7 chemically different, though remarkably similar, vitamins. Frequently, this group of 7 chemically similar vitamins is referred to as a Vitamin B Complex. The most common name used when referring to vitamin B6 is pyridoxine (PN). This form of vitamin B6 is the most common form given as supplementation for deficiency or other medical uses. Other types include pyridoxine 5'-phosphate (PNP), pyridoxamine (PM), and pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate (PMP). Pyridoxal (PL) and 4-pyrodoxic acid (PA), as well as pyritinol, are also included.
