Required reading for anyone interested in Victorian society

The word "Victorian" conjures up images of rigid order and stultifying conformity. However, in this book, author and historian Professor Eugene C. Black of Brandeis University sweeps aside those mistaken images. The Victorian era was one of economic, social and political evolution bordering on revolution. This book contains a series of chapters, each one with an introduction, a recommended reading list, and a document from the Victorian era that gives the actual Victorian viewpoint of the subject. Overall, I found this to be a fascinating book, one that really should be considered required reading for anyone interested in Victorian society. Many subjects are covered here - economic (such as trade unions, and land and power), social (including domestic service, and recreation), and cultural (everything from John Stuart Mill to John Henry Newman to Samuel Smiles). This is a great book, one that I highly recommend to all senior students of the Victorian era.
