One of them is reported. What is actually down there: the eight deep-level shelters built for eight thousand people each. The driverless mail railway twenty-one meters beneath the sorting offices, closed in 2003 and then maintained for thirteen more years by four engineers, for nobody. The thirty-five-acre underground city the British government cut into the Bath stone, kept secret for fifty years, and emptied out in 2004 - leaving behind, in unopened boxes, four thousand government-issue ashtrays.
The other is fiction. Two thousand three hundred people who happened to be underground when the doors closed, and the five years in which they had to decide, in writing and by a show of hands, who lives.
They build nothing new. Nobody has the time. What they have is a set of voids other people dug for other reasons, and the obligation to keep those voids working. Pump. Filter. Antenna. Door.
This is not a book about the apocalypse. It is a maintenance manual.
The catastrophe is invented. The measurements, the facilities, the laws, the clinical principles and the tunnels are not. Every one of them is real, every one is in the bibliography, and the book closes with a list of exactly which is which.
