The inflammation of the blood vessels in the body is referred to as vasculitis. Capillaries, blood vessels of medium size, and even large blood vessels like the aorta are all potential targets for the inflammatory disease vascularitis (the main blood vessel that leaves the heart). Aneurysms are a risk for patients whose blood vessels become inflamed because this condition can cause the blood vessels to weaken and expand. In some cases, the blood vessels can become so fragile that they burst, causing bleeding to occur within the tissue. Vasculitis can also cause blood vessels to become more narrow, even to the point where they completely close off (called an occlusion). If blood flow is restricted or stopped in a vessel that has vasculitis, the tissues that receive blood from that vessel become injured and begin to die.
