Van Gogh's Novel

By Jan L Siesling

"Van Gogh's Novel" is the translation (by the author) of the 1991 French novel "Le Roman de Van Gogh". Well documented, the book is an effort to go beyond the correspondence of Vincent van Gogh, and in a sense beyond the painting. The result is the biography of a reader. Instead of the life story of a painter who also read books, it is the life story of a reader of literature who also painted. The major benefit of this approach bringing us closer to the secret of the artist's suicide. Contrary to the original, this edition is enriched by an extensive commentary in the form of notes by a former student of Siesling from the time he taught art history as assistant professor at the Study Abroad Program of Syracuse University, NY, in Strasbourg, France.
