The Los Angeles River runs banked by contradiction. Along a natural watershed equestrians canter beneath sombreros, factories mold gas station signs, bicyclists sip lattes, and birds dip, all of their moments tied to the mountains and the ocean by the simple motion of water between the banks. This enigma of nature within an urban watershed pulled author Tamara Lang and photographer Glenn Lewis into the Los Angeles River. On bike and on foot, Lang and Lewis followed the water upstream from the Pacific Ocean in Long Beach into the tributaries of the San Gabriel Mountains, until scale dissolved into a simple story of connection.Upstream, the Los Angeles Watershed writes its own story.
