This was my first Duets, but not my last. These are a very good length for light reading, a good idea."Undercover Elf" is the better of the two stories, perhaps because it has a lot more humor (though some of it is rather slapstick). "Unexpected Angel" has a really cute little kid, though, so perhaps they even out. It was a nice touch (and easy to do when the same author does both stories) that the stories intersected for about a paragraph apiece and took place in the same town. Two totally different storylines (both are Christmas-oriented) offer wonderful heroes and interesting heroines immersed in unusual situations. The sex scenes were written very smoothly (something you don't usually find) and didn't overpower the plot. The sexual tension had all the emphasis, as it should have. I enjoyed the entire book.Just one question: who the heck ATE all that food Holly made during "Unexpected Angel?" She was a full-blown bakery running at top speed, but there were only four of them in the house...

If you've read Kate Hoffman's books before, then you probably know you're in for plenty of laughs each time you sit down with one of her stories. True enough, Ms. Hoffman's December double Duets #41, UNEXPECTED ANGEL and UNDERCOVER ELF, lives up to the promise excellently! You'll get two delightful stories centering around Christmas that will leave you feeling cozy and warm and definitely smiling. In UNEXPECTED ANGEL we are transported to Schuler Falls, NY where we meet seven-year old Eric Marrin. Now this sweet little boy would give anything to be able to have a `perfect' Christmas, just like it used to be before his mom walked out on him and his Dad. Eric's friend Raymond claimed that the Dalton's Department store Santa was the `real' one and he made wishes come true. Eric decides to visit the Dalton Santa and ask for the perfect Christmas. Well, imagine the thrill he feels when the doorbell rings a few days later and on his doorstep he finds his UNEXPECTED ANGEL, come to fulfill his dream of a perfect Christmas. Of course, once his father meets his Angel, Eric suddenly finds himself wishing she'd stay forever!UNDERCOVER ELF introduces us to reporter Claudia Moore who wants to discover the secret behind the Santa at Dalton's Department store. Rumor has it that this Santa can make dreams come true. Claudia pitches her story to the New York Times and gains two weeks time in which to learn the identity of the mysterious benefactor. She goes undercover by applying for a position as Santa's elf at the store. However, due to a misunderstanding, she finds herself in a provocative discussion about lingerie with none other than the owner of Dalton's Department store which only leads to more interesting discoveries! If you're looking for light and easy reads with loads of humor, you can't go wrong with Kate Hoffman's Duets #41, UNEXPECTED ANGEL and UNDERCOVER ELF. The characters will keep you glued to the pages and the laughter just doesn't stop. I found myself laughing out loud throughout both stories and plan to definitely read them again soon. The reason the stories stay in your mind for a long time is that Ms. Hoffman displays a brilliant talent to blend just the right amount of humor with tender-hearted and emotional stories full of characters that climb right into your heart and never let go. Ms. Hoffman's sense of humor can only be compared to the finest wine - it gets better with each book she writes. Bravo Ms. Hoffman! I'm eagerly looking forward to your next release.
A cute romance...or two

Unexpected Angel: In Schuyler Falls, New York, all seven-year-old Eric Martin wants for Christmas is a return to the holiday season before his mom walked out on him and his dad. He even asks the Santa at Dalton's Department Store to arrange the former Christmas celebration that his mom used to arrange. This is one Santa who believes in performing and soon after the request, Holly Bennett is hired to spruce up Eric's holiday season. As Holly brings joy back into the lives of the Martin males, she falls in love.Undercover Elf: Reporter Claudia Moore hears a rumor that the Santa at the Schuyler Falls, Dalton's Department Store makes wishes come true. She pitches her story to the Times and is granted two weeks to uncover the truth about a silent benefactor, an oxymoron in the age of media braggarts. After a misunderstanding with store manager Tom Dalton, Claudia is hired as an elf. Claudia plans to expose Santa as a fraud, which should not be hard since Tom only does the chore because his grandfather insists that is part of learning how to run their business. Neither Santa nor his newest elf expected to fall in love.Kate Hoffmann provides her audience with two warm Christmas novels that are filled with magic due to the enchanting characters. Although Duets pulled a twist by having one author contribute both tales, it works as the stories interrelate yet cleverly stand-alone. Romance readers who relish an upbeat holiday story or two will enjoy these tales by Hoffmann.Harriet Klausner
