At forty-eight, Patrick Berthet has just lost his father. Patrick is an eminent architect from a large provincial town, himself the father of two teenagers and still just as much in love with the woman who has been sharing his life for nearly twenty years; but this is a time to re-evaluate his life. Although held in check for a while, the sadness and exhaustion provoked by his bereavement worm their way in. Worse than this, Patrick discovers he has an illness that leaves him only months to live. He stoically arranges his departure as cool-headedly as possible until the doctors announce that it was an incorrect diagnosis.

His relief is soon followed by a terrible weariness. How to go on living when an anticipated death leaves room for surplus life? Patrick chooses to shut himself away in a hotel room, far from his loved ones, his family and friends. Then begins a comical retirement set to indulge the most unexpected wishes.
