There are so many martial arts books that glorify and adorn the practice of martial arts as to give the practitioner "super-human" powers. This book instead presents the hard facts and real mental and physical challenges that a martial artist may face by putting you in the story of one young man who journeyed this path. This book portrays the hard work that leads to a knowledge and confidence that can only be known by going thru it. It is a process and journey that first breaks a person down and rebuilds them stronger and more focused and much more in touch with themselves. This book is very insightful and heart warming. It is well written by a famous martial arts master and his student. I believe it to be a valuable read for anyone interested in martial arts. The lessons learned can change your life. A Recommended Read.
This Book Is Essential Reading For All True Martial Artists!

I have long wished that a book such as this one would be released in English. Saiko-Shihan Y. Oyama has done an excellent job writing this book in a style that martial artists as well as non martial artists can understand by reading it. This is a "human story" that everyone can relate to on some level. I had the great priviledge and opportunity to train numerous times in Kyokushin Karate under this top Instructor in the early 1970's. I was a direct student of his older brother, Soshu S. Oyama, the best student of the legendary Grand Master Mas. Oyama(no relation), the late founder of Kyokushin Karate. Saiko-Shihan Y. would visit the Dojo of Soshu S. Oyama and teach there as a special guest instructor on numerous occasions, as well as at the annual Summer training camp in upstate Massachusetts. His dynamic and unique teaching style is extraordinary and he was deemed "the best technician in Kyokushin history" due to his flawless and precise techniques. I often thought about how lucky I was to be taught by the best instructors in the World at the time. I cherish the times I trained then and now share them with my own students. My 8 year old son is now training and he is greatly inspired by these traditional instructors, as well as this book. Saiko-Shihan Oyama's writing style is alot like his teaching style, very passionate and intense. He captures the attention and the imagination of his readers and doesn't let go until you finish the entire book. I highly recommend this book as essential reading for all true martial artists who can get a glimpse of what Uchi-Deshi (Live in Students who train fulltime)from reading this inspiring story. The true meaning of the Japanese martial arts is often misunderstood here in America. The beauty of this book is that it clears up alot of misconceptions and inaccuracies as it pertains to genuine Japanese martial arts. I hope that Saiko-Shihan Y. Oyama will release more books in the future relating the martial arts experience and philosophy. If this book is an indication of more to come, we are truly in for a treat. OSU!
A Real Story About REAL Karate and Success
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 19 years ago
The story is real. From the first paragraph to the very end, the writer takes you into a world that is often misunderstood and distorted by fantasy. The book delivers a powerful story about the opportunity a young man has to overcome disappointment in his life and become a champion. You won't read about "how to do it" karate techniques in this book but you will read about dedication, perserverance and winning...the qualities of a champion. A good read to the very last page.
A Great Story of Triumph

This book is a very inspiring read. It's about martial arts, but it doesn't rely on watered-down deep philosophy to illustrate the beauty of Karate training. It shows how just ordinary people can discover new things about themselves through dedication and hard training. There's something in it for everyone.
A great story!

A successful businessman from Japan sends his lost son to America to train in Karate? You don't have to be a karate fan to love this story. From the first page I was hooked. The author is obviously into Karate but he is also a great writer. It's one of those rare books that just make you feel good while reminding you of the endless potential of the human spirit.
