The two couples navigate the complexities of their relationships, with Lily struggling to balance her love for her fianc with her desire for freedom and independence, and Violet facing the disapproval of her family for her unconventional choice of partner. The novel explores themes of love, family, societal expectations, and the struggle for personal fulfillment in a rigidly structured society.
