Twenty Years In Retirement (Volume I)

By John Blakiston

Book Overview

Retirement rarely makes history; John Blakiston does. In Twenty Years in Retirement (Volume I), the quiet hours after work become a vivid record of mind, manners, and meaning. Time slows; memory turns luminous. Written as a Victorian memoir and literary autobiography in a sequence of classic reminiscence essays, Blakiston reflects on retirement life, reading, friendships, and the small rituals that shape a day. His tone is observant rather than grand: retirement life reflections that weigh aging and contentment, and everyday society observations that catch the temper of Victorian England society without strain. For anyone drawn to 19th century Britain, the book offers lived texture more intimate than a textbook - a strand of British social history told from the armchair, with wit, restraint, and a moral seriousness typical of its age. You hear a private voice moving through public change, attentive to class, courtesy, and the passing fashions of talk, taste, and belief. It is equally satisfying as reading for retirees seeking recognition in another era, and as a thoughtful gift for retirement for readers who prefer substance to sentiment. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Presented as unabridged classic nonfiction, it deserves a place beside the best Victorian memoirs: more than a period curiosity, a durable companion for slow afternoons and a volume collectors will return to.
