The most prominent modern Hellene poet between the 1870s and the middle of the twentieth century, Kostis Palamas stands unchallenged in the Hellenic pantheon of Modern Poets; his long career spanned several decades and culminated in his being named the National Poet of Hellas. His contribution to Modern Hellenic poetry, inspired by both the Neo-Hellene poetic tradition and contemporary European trends was immense and his work varied widely in form and mood as well as in subject matter, which ranged from everyday life events to esoteric views of the Hellenic psyche, to historical events, and international issues and trends. As a leading proponent of the Greek literary renewal envisioned by the so-called generation of 1880, Palamas, fully aware of his leading role, undertook, in addition to renewing the interpretation of the Hellenic literary tradition, the renewal of the literary horizon, which presupposed the emergence of new poets.
