True Ghost Stories From Forgotten Places
Some hauntings become famous. Others remain in the shadows, carried by local memory, old records, whispered testimony and the uneasy reputation of buildings that never quite let the past go.
In True Ghost Stories from Forgotten Places, Peter Davies gathers thirty lesser-known hauntings from Britain, Ireland, Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. These are not the overused names of popular ghost-lore, but quieter and often stranger places: lonely farmhouses, industrial mills, decaying castles, old theatres, former prisons, taverns, manors, vicarages, quarantine stations and burial grounds where history and haunting seem impossible to separate.
From the Cooneen Ghost of County Fermanagh to the troubled rooms of Ballechin House, from Willington Mill in Northumberland to the Great Amherst Mystery in Nova Scotia, from haunted Welsh manors and Scottish castles to shadowed inns, forts, chapels and forgotten corridors, this book follows the stories as nonfiction traditions rooted in real locations. Each account is handled with care, placing the ghostly claims beside the human histories that gave them weight: grief, illness, poverty, war, punishment, family tragedy, religious fear, accident, memory and the strange persistence of witness testimony.
Written in a restrained and atmospheric style, this collection does not force belief or dismiss the unknown too easily. Instead, it steps carefully through the rooms, staircases, cells, corridors and burial grounds where stories survived long after the first witnesses were gone.
For readers drawn to true ghost stories, haunted history, old houses, folklore, psychical research and the darker corners of local tradition, True Ghost Stories from Forgotten Places offers a chilling journey into the places fame forgot, but fear remembered.
