For as long as he can remember, Tristian has dreamed of a place he has never seen, a city shrouded in darkness, a mysterious girl, a frightened slave-boy, and terrifying riders whose eyes burn with something far more sinister than hatred.

To everyone in Woodendale, Tristian is simply a young woodsman preparing to enter the next season of his life. He is strong, kind, and content with the ordinary life he has always known. But on the day of his coming-of-age celebration, a visit to a mysterious seer changes everything.

The seer knows about Tristian's dreams. He knows about the strange mark hidden beneath the glove on Tristian's left hand. And he knows something Tristian has never dared to believe: the people, places, and dangers in his dreams are real.

Before Tristian can understand what any of it means, he is forced to flee his home and begin a journey into a world he knows only through dreams. Along the way, he encounters Kaya, a fiercely independent young huntress with a bow and a guarded heart, and Ting, a former slave carrying knowledge of a dark kingdom ruled by a merciless lord.

Their meeting seems impossible. Their stories seem strangely connected. And somewhere beyond the river, the Dark Riders are searching for someone marked by destiny.

Now three unlikely companions must journey into a land ruled by fear, where an ancient prophecy is beginning to unfold and the darkness is drawing closer.
