This is a very interesting book, and the author is a well-educated person, trained in anthropology and linguistics. As the child of missionaries, he lived in India, the Philippines, and later in Papua New Guinea. His "translator's toolbox," the practical part of this book, would be useful for any field researcher. However, sections such as "the impact of sin" reveal a complete lack of self-examination as to why "receptor cultures" should have ancient Middle Eastern taboos and mythology foisted upon them. Missionaries are a culture that deserve to be studied by anthropologists. Grad thesis, anyone?
