Among the most terrifying storms are tornadoes and superstorms. Capturing all of the drama, destruction, and power of these massive storms in the graphic nonfiction format, this book will be flying off the library shelves. The three storms covered in this book are the 1925 tornado that plowed a path of destruction through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana; the 1991 "perfect" storm that hit the fishing boat the Andrea Gail; and the F5 tornado that tore through Texas towns in 1997.
Throughout history, tornadoes and hurricanes have brought about horrendous death and destruction worldwide. Gary Jeffrey examines TORNADOES & SUPERSTORMS in this 2007 entry in Rosen Publishing's 'Graphic Natural Disasters' series. Like others in the series, it's intended for readers in the 9-12 age group. After four pages of text and photographs detailing the nature/history of tornadoes and superstorms, the book presents Graphic Novel stories on the Tri-State Tornado of 1925, the Halloween Storm of 1991 and the 1997 Jarrell Killer Tornado. Illustrator Terry Riley does a good job of presenting the reality of such storms. People in peril are depicted but the presentation isn't sensationalistic. Readers in the 9-12 group should be able to handle the material. The book wraps up with a section on weather warning technology, a glossary and a 'For Further Information' section. TORNADOES & SUPERSTORMS does an effective, dramatic job of introducing those deadly winds to younger readers. Recommended.
