Hughes served as a Member of Parliament but he is best known for writing the classic novel Tom Brown's School Days, published in 1857, and its sequel Tom Brown at Oxford, published in 1861.Tom Brown's School Days is a semi-autobiographical story that centers around Tom's experiences at Rugby School in the 1830s. The book was very influential in the development of British school novels and it has been turned into many films and television shows.
