Ghouls live among us, the same as normal people in every way--except their craving for human flesh. Ghouls live among us, the same as normal people in every way--except their craving for human flesh. Ken Kaneki is an ordinary college student until a violent encounter turns him into the first half-human half-ghoul hybrid. Trapped between two worlds, he must survive Ghoul turf wars, learn more about Ghoul society and master his new powers. Kaneki, Nishio and Touka struggle to work together to rescue their human friend Kimi while Ghoul Investigator deaths skyrocket in wards 9 through 12. It all leads to an increase in CCG agents and an increased risk for Ghouls. As reinforcements are called in on both sides, the stakes are suddenly higher than ever.
Shu Tsukiyama, known as The Gourmet, wants to take a bite out of our protagonist Ken Kaneki, quite literally. To lure Kaneki, Tsukiyama kidnapped Nishio's human girlfriend Kimi, causing Nishio to begrudgingly ask Kaneki for help since he is still not fully healed from his last fight. Thankfully Touka followed the boys and interceded before Tsukiyama could have his chef-d'œuvre (masterpiece) feast.
There's also a side story that lets us see a little bit of Rize's life before she came to the 20th ward. It was quite a nice interlude since it was third to the last chapter giving us some time to adjust back to the main story before the next volume.
Of course, there's plenty of action and some more quick flashbacks giving us a peek into some of the ghouls and humans motives.
All in all, a solid volume that gave us more character development than plot advancement, sucking me further in to the world of ghouls.
