Ken Jewett, retired Air Force Colonel and erudite author of To the Valley, uses his considerable knowledge of the military and early American history to write a fast-paced, vivid, historical fiction... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I really liked this book. The story is fiction but you would could never tell reading it. The story is woven into history with expert touch. I very much enjoyed the interactions with real historical figures and it helped to make them seem more real and like I knew them better as people. I especially liked the characters Tom and Jim, they really added fun to the book. I wish I could meet a guy like Tom in real life! If you don't read this book you are missing a real treat. This is the pre-revolutionary war version of "The DaVinci Code".

This is an excellent read for a first time out. Mr. Jewett's historic facts are right on and he has the knack for making it interesting even to the non-history buff. The characters are believable and memorable. Will be eagerly waiting the next offering from Mr. Jewett. Hopefully, it won't be too far in the future.
Can't wait for the next book

Excellent Book. I was caught within the first couple chapters. The descriptions of life, politics, and survival during the early years of the American colonies provides real insight to what it was like back then. It is a fun read with a lot of history thrown in for good measure. I can't wait for the next book.
Historical Fiction at Its Best

As a big fan of the historical fiction genre, Ken Jewett's book is a very welcome edition. "To the Valley" provides insights and interest for a period of history not visited enough in recent years. Michener and Vidal today are better known proponents of the historical novel, but "To the Valley" deserves to be read alongside of their best. Given the rich possiblities of continuing the saga of the Jewett family, I can only hope the next book in a series is already being written.
Believable and Historically Faithful

I was impressed. As a person who enjoys accurate historical fiction, I was impressed. The descriptions of the people, the period, the customs, equipment and life were utterly believable. But this book is not just a compilation of facts, figures and descriptions. It is a story of a family, living and sticking together, in a time of incredible potential danger and hardship that existed as part of actual daily life. Character development was vivid and I was able to visualize the person as more than just a name in a book. The customs of the Native American characters was also accurately described, demonstrating to me, excellent research. I strongly recommend this book to persons of all ages. I am looking forward to any additional books by Mr. Jewett and hopefully more information on his facinating family.
