Nelly Ostrand is twenty-seven and lives in a small town on Lake Superior. She spent eight years taking care of her mother, who died two Octobers ago, and now she works alone in a basement fixing damaged books. The college licenses a machine to help her read a ruined diary from 1913. It runs on a microphone, because her hands are always wet, so she has to talk to it out loud. It talks back. It asks her things nobody has asked her in years.

She names it Solen. When the company offers to put it in a body, she sells her mother's house to pay for it.
