Time Travel — A Thought Experiment

Prompted by a hypnogogic lucid dream about time travel, wherein the timeline of the author was portrayed within four distinctly colored vector-diagrams representing the major cosmologies of physics, i.e. Newtonian Physics, Einsteinian Space-Time, Quantum Mechanics and String Theory, Jack Lamb transcribed this thought experiment to ascertain whether Time Travel might be possible in any or all of them. Thought experiments afford a practical methodology by which an abstractly opaque challenge or an enigmatically obtuse probability, presently believed incomprehensible within the intricacy of the conscious reality in which we exist, might conceivably be resolved by purely thinking about the problem in question without introducing any new empirical data to simplify the quandary under investigation. Quintessentially, thought experiments are conceptualizations of our human imagination employed in the investigation of the nature of things, in order to discern a theoretical and realistic solution where other approaches have failed to provide meaningful insight.We can all surely agree that each of us is already a Time Traveler traversing a unique timeline across the perpetual sands of time on a definitive trajectory through the seemingly incomprehensible framework of perceptual and conceptual reality defining who we are, who we were and who we will be. Consequently, the ultimate path each of us tracks in time is delimited and directed by the happenings we experience and recollect based on the decisions and conclusions we make as we negotiate the instantaneous, ever-changing, splinter of self-awareness we recognize as a present state of consciousness towards what we perceive to be a generally causal and somewhat predictable future. But for the purposes of this book, essentially Time Travel is considered to be the hypothetical ability to move through time into the past or the future via one's conscious volition, or a yet to be devised mechanism. Moreover, there has been a consensus of agreement for the past few hundred years that the arrows of time we separately track somehow align with a grander universal unidirectional Arrow of Time, which inexorably moves along an irreversible trajectory through reality for the unanimity of eternity, never to be reversed, cycled or repeated. So for the purpose of the thought experiment examined in this book, the term time travel refers to any movement within any temporal dimensions within reality considered incongruent with, or anathema to, this dogmatic and ostensibly sacrosanct belief in a universal unidirectional arrow of time. Nevertheless, might we conceivably someday find a way to travel backwards or forward in time in direct opposition to this supposedly inviolable Arrow of Time? The conclusions ascertained within this book might surprise you.
