Best Short Story Writer in USA

A short story writer, Anthony Bukoski has written "Time Between Trains." He may be the best short story writer in America, a master that discriminating readers of literary fiction know. Bukoski teaches at a small Mid-Western college, University of Wisconsin-Superior. And the writer grew up in Superior, Wisconsin in the fifties, when the parents and grandparents of the lake port, Superior, Wisconsin still spoke Polish.Bukoski's characters, the downtrodden of a frozen port at the tip of Lake Superior are proud of their lost Poland, a place of sad fading memories. The Catholic Church is the beacon of the community and the aging women pray and ward off fantasies of superstition and the realities of poverty. The men work grunt jobs at mills and shipyards rusting with the old economies of the mid-century. And all that work is done in sub-zero weather. No wonder the patrons of Superior taverns have the highest per-capita degree of alcoholism in the United States.Each story tells a tale of a particular Superior resident, a little boy, a drunken Polish Sailor, a frightened American soldier back from Vietnam, and a beautiful love story about lonely heart people in desolate forests. I highly recommend.
