Till My Baby Comes Home takes place during World War II, beginning with Army maneuvers in the fall of 1941 near a small North Carolina town. The war brings changes to the lives of the townspeople: Hallie Benoy, too good for the mill where she works and for her absent husband, falls in love with a soldier, to the distress of her teen-aged daughter; Benton Eller, the town pharmacist, whose widowed daughter-in-law and teen-aged grandson have come down from the north to live with him, somewhat uneasily. The novel follows the lives of these and others, including Hallie's once-missing husband, through the maneuvers, the war, and the years after.
