Three Letters Three Words

By Angelina N. Sithebe

Girly Marata is living and still striving for a perfect life in a big beautiful home in Johannesburg with her husband and two boys. She is a highly educated, hardworking professional, about to become a CEO.A loyal and generous daughter and friend, she appears to be the perfect example of success in post-apartheid South Africa. Shielded by protective, strict parents, she was raised to emulate the values of her parents - highly principled, responsible, caring and generous. She does not see her faults - rudeness, impatience, obnoxious snobbish superiority complex and stubborn determination.
The death of a friend of twenty years brings her buried past of date rape, rejection, suicide attempts, a miscarriage and death to the surface. Threatening to destroy all she has worked for. Her dormant dissatisfaction erupts, exposing her vulnerability. Girly is angry at society's complacency, she is angry at racism, at her husband, at her first love, at herself, at her children, at her friends. She is in despair. Seeking meaning in marriage, in society, in her meaningless overpaying job.

Unexpectedly, her life is altered irrevocably. Physically, spiritually, emotionally and financially, she is forced to start all over again. At what appears to be the bottom, she begins with no expectations. Only then is she able to finally accept herself and those around her. She finds herself as a woman, rediscovers motherhood, childhood and friendship. At the crossroad of a difficult journey, she chooses survival.
