A hospital is such a boring place, but Brent, Kirk and Amy will have you laughing with their wild ideas and witty jabs at one another and about life in the hospital. Though different from each other, they develop into a warm, enviable, three-way friendship--only to have this closeness shattered by a tragedy that none expects. It will affect you. [Realistic fiction suitable for the intermediate through junior high grades, if not higher.]
One of the best teenage books I read. Still 5 stars 25+ years later.

3 teenage kids are spending their summer in a hospital. Brent has landed there by falling through a trap door in a barn. What he finds in the hospital will change his life. Brent becomes friends with Kirk and Amy. Amy is in the hospital for what her Mom has told her is Mono but she suspects that it is something worse. Kirk is there after hip surgery, his hip joint is not growing at the same rate as his leg bones and the doctors had to pin him back together. The teenagers spend a lot of time talking about life and figuring out ways to drive the staff nuts. Such as when Kirk fakes throwing his hip out to get the Nurse to call a Doctor in, and when the Dr. arrives he is sitting in his wheelchair and states nothing had happened. They also talk about how they are similar to being in a "Three Legged Race" and that you need the help of someone else to get to the finish line. The three even plan to escape the hospital one night and head out into the world supporting each other, acting like normal teenagers, with a wheel chair, crutches and a back brace. Their closeness and bonding will help them through the greatest tragedy which is yet to come in their young lives. This is one of the best stories I have ever read about dealing with teenage anxiety, hormones, mischief and loss. You will feel for all 3 of the characters, and see how they are pulled together. It is a strong story about teamwork among different types of people thrown into unfamiliar surroundings and circumstances. I originally read this book in High School and pulled it out to review it for this review, it is one of a dozen books I have kept since then. Only to find I was drawn back into it. The other reviewer of this story misleads you about the ending. You have to read the book to find out what really happens.

THREE LEGGED RACE The books name is "Three Legged Race" The author's name is "Charles P. Crawford" the book is called Three Legged Race because it is about three kids who help each other get trough the pain of their accident. Also because Kirk said "This is like a Three Legged Race" and that you need somebody to get to the finish line.I Brent had an accident going in through a trapdoor. It was in the summer when it happened. My family took me to the hospital; I don't think the hospital was a good summer vacation, I found a friend called Kirk he is very cool, he is also very funny. Then I found another friend named Amy, I think I am very dynamic. My major conflict is my accident and having to go to the hospital. My friends Amy and Kirk and me start to tap about our parts. Also start to make up some crazy ideas to make the future more interesting then we become a team and felt the truth of Kirk's comment. He said "it is like a three legged race," I think you can't make it to the finish line by yourself. Then we all were having so much fun we forgot we were in a hospital. Then we couldn't see the future ahead.I think you should read this book because it talks about friendship. Also because it talks about how "you can't make it to the finish line by yourself" and how "It is a Three Legged Race". This also talks about how friends help you get trough the tough and tough times. This is a very very good book it helps you find the real you and explains how real life and how reality is, get this book in stores and read it you will be amazed. The conclusion of the story is that they helped each other get past their feelings. Also that they all got to get out of the hospital and didn't have to stay in hospital anymore.
