Wonderful gift for the recent graduate or friend recently promoted or advancing into a new job...

I was listening to a speaker we invited to campus this past week -- Michael Wesch, a cultural anthropologist from Kansas State -- and was reminded during a discussion about how we and our students swim amid the new media of ipods, Twitter, Facebook and plasma screens that one of the serious problems our students face is that "words of wisdom" that were once handed down, face-to-face, one generation to the next, are now -- too often -- drowned out by the overwhelming influence of video games, television and other MTV-generation media. Thus, it was, that I happened upon this little gem from American Heritage. Pocket-sized and only 152 pages, the editors have done a good job of identifying and publishing a good selection of thought-provoking wisdom worthy of reflection from a wide range of noted thinkers, businessmen, writers, philosophers and playrights. The selections include: Walt Whitman, Francis bacon, Woodrow Wilson, Robert A. Heinlein, Plato, Tacitus, Aristophanes, Europdes, William Dean Howells, David Hume, Albert Einstin, among others. There are, of course, many other excellent book-length sources for quotations, most notably "Barlett's Quotations," but how often does one take the time to quietly read and meditate with such a hefty book in hand? Right, not often, if ever. Thus, the value of this handy little book that can be easily dropped into a briefcase for reading on a flight or over a cup of coffee, or to be kept by the bedside table to read and reflect upon right before going to sleep. Highly recommended as a gift for the new graduate, a friend recently promoted or "seekers" always curious and interested in learning. R. Neil Scott Middle Tennessee State University
