This is one of those rare volumes that will remain the gold standard

In an epoch long ago, Helen Cripe from Indiana (where was that again?) arrived in Charlottesville, Virginia, and walked grounds of Mr. Jefferson's University. Learned scholars who obsessed over The Great Man's great ideas were casting long and serious shadows. But for Dr. Cripe, Mr. Jefferson's past was more than ideology. Restless questions about his life and social context were starting to be raised. Helen, a musician and careful scholar, set about searching Jefferson's tastes and abilities as a violinist and a man with a family and plantation. Her first edition of this work was a landmark project. Many Googles and hours later, this revision emerges. It is the work of many great and careful minds. It is focused and deserves wide readership as definitive in the field.
