Modern History Meets Romance and Drama

I really liked this book! I found very few flaws in it and felt that it was written in a carefully construed way that still retained some spontaneity and lots of lightheartedness. To me, this book feels very universally appealing— it’s witty, captivating, romantic, and reflective. The characters are flawed and might frustrate you sometimes, since they encapsulate elements of adolescence that are meant to do just that. I also think this book depicts an important narrative that authors tend to shy away from, possibly due to shame, resistance, or simply lack of information. I think young readers interested in novels involving love triangles, family drama, and historical pseudo-fiction would really like this book and I would recommend it to those readers specifically.

Boring and simplistic writing. But great LGBTQ representation

I wanted to love this book, especially with the representation. But man, I was so incredibly bored. The writing was simplistic at best. Just felt very forced, even the dialog. The story didn't seem to move along at all. The first half of it was just talking about the flower shop and arguments between CJ, her mother, and her aunt. I really did love the LGBTQ+ representation and the hardships of an Asian community. That's the only reason this is getting 2 stars. Those 2 things were well done and well thought out. But the rest of the story was so blah. It took some effort to get through it. I also loved the cover! I just wish there was more depth to the characters as well as things actually happening.
