If I want to get married and have a family (and I do), it's time for a plan --from Hallie McCarthy's diary The alarm on Hallie's biological clock is buzzing away. She's hitting the big three-0 and there's no prospect of marriage, no man in sight. But Hallie's an organized, goal-setting kind of person. She gives herself a year to meet Mr. Knight in Shining Armor. But all her dates are disasters. (There's the cheapskate and the sex fiend and...well, never mind.) Too bad she can't just fall for her good-looking neighbor, Steve Marris. He's definitely not her type. Anyway, Steve's busy trying to win back his ex-wife, Mary Lynn, who's busy getting married--but not to Steve. Life would be so much simpler if he could fall for someone else. Like...Hallie. They're friends, though--and sometimes friends become lovers. Sometimes friends become more....
I was hooked from the moment I started reading and couldn't put the book down. Storyline has a great evolution into romance. Not cheesy at all.

This is the first Debbie Macomber book I have read and definitely won't be the last. I enjoyed every page of it! Usually in the past I've found romance novels to be either sappy or sad or both. But a good romantic comedy is hard to come by. The author does a wonderful job of incorporating humor into the story, and still you can feel the heat between the two main characters even though they refuse to see it. Reading about Hallie's disasterous dates was extremely entertaining. Another thing I enjoyed was the setting, being from the Pacific Northwest myself, I recognized many of the places referred to in this book. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants entertainment, but nothing super-deep. This book also made me rather glad I got married when I was 20!
A prize! A prize!

I listened to the audio of this book and have to say two things: First, it is a six-star story. It's funny and fun, with a hanky needed toward the end. Story details aren't really necessary -- it's a wonderful example of Debbie Macomber's work. Basically, two people who live next door to each other take the long way around to discover that they are perfect for each other. They start out as friends, and discover love along the way.The second thing is that I have listened to a vast collection of audio books while driving to and from work over the years and have found NONE read better than Paula Parker read this one. The young children in the story are a key element, and her voices for the characters are perfect. You will enjoy this story and its presentation. Highly recommended.
An excellent example of what romance novels should be.

Nobody does this genre better than Debbie MacOmber. Contemporary issues, realistic characters, warm humour.... I fall right in and come out at the end smiling. If you don't normally read romance, D MacOmber is the way to start.
