There's no malaria here

This book is the result of master's research in anthropology, in which I reflect on the bodily experiences of those who inhabit spaces externally labeled as inhospitable due to their characteristics, which at first glance suggest a propensity for diseases such as Malaria, drawing from lived experiences in the Munhuana Neighborhood in the city of Maputo-a field of analysis that crossed studies of the body, health and disease processes, and space. This reflection is part of a phenomenological and constructivist approach based on the theoretical assumptions that the body is a social construction shielded against diseases in inhospitable spaces, as is the case with malaria in Munhuana. Starting from the notion of the socially constructed body, through multiple elements for protection against diseases in inhospitable environments, I look at the critique of biological determinism and its reifying view that naturalizes the body, offering an analysis that moves away from the body-as-object to consider the body also as a subject. The central argument in this work is that the body placed in situations of inhospitality, based on the narratives of the interlocutors, experiences and socially constructs mechanisms to survive the environment to which it is exposed.
