Theorizing Sexual Violence in Wartime

Sexual violence in wartime (SVW) is not a new phenomenon, but it remains a silent issue. It is the media that draws the international community's attention to SVW. This study describes the state of knowledge on SVW and critically analyzes the main methodologies used by studies published in peer-reviewed journals. The analysis showed that "structural sexual violence" has its roots in existing social, economic, educational, and political institutions and structures, due to asymmetrical power relations and gender roles. This is transformed into "conjunctural sexual violence" and hinders the prevention of SVW. Two methodologies (qualitative and quantitative) and three data collection techniques (questionnaire, interview, and documentary) were used to explore the phenomenon of GBV. To better understand GBV, it must be explored during times of peace, among both men and women, using varied, contextual, triangulated, and rigorous methodologies.
