Children and the Environment.

There are a ton of children's books written about taking care of the environment and quite frankly, most are dull and lipid, failing to capture the imagination of the reader and/or audience. THE WUMP WORLD is not such a book. Instead, it's one of the few pro-environment children's books that is actually enjoyable to read. The message the book teaches is more than just about pollution (even though the story's villians are called Pollutians) and has to do with loving nature, taking care of the precious planet we live, and the hope of good overcoming evil. The illustrations are amusing and capture both the mood of the story and the personalities of the creatures represented. For example, the Pollutians ships and machines look like real life contraptions, but with a monster-like appearance. The kids I used to teach in preschool loved this story and it was one I enjoyed reading, too.

A Third-Grade Wonder

My third-grade teacher read this story to my class when I was eight years old and it immediately became the class favorite book. I was so enchanted with the story, I went home and wrote an play based on it. The production of "The Wump World" by Mrs. H's Class was an elementary school smash, and I love the book to this day. It is a gentle reminder that we cannot take our world for granted. I love this book!

A very simple message relayed in a great way!

This is my favorite Bill Peet book (although The Whingdingdilly is close) and one of my favorite children's books. My father (who is also a children't book writer) read it to me over 15 years ago, and it has played a role in my love of the environment and environmental issues in general, although I did not realize it at the time! Bill Peet's illustration's are wonderful and the apparent simplicity of the story is also a key feature so that every child can understand the message of the book. The last page of the story really leaves the reader with a sense of optimism, which is very important for children to have. A must read!
