Great little history gem for young readers.

Unfortunately all most people know about our 31st president is that a few months after he was inaugurated the stock market crashed, leading to the Great Depression, and Hoover gets the blame because he was there; not that he was born to a poor Quaker farm family and orphaned as a young boy, spent some time on an Indian reservation, and was sent across country alone at age 11 on a train over-crowded with immigrants to live with relatives in Oregon. Hoover later worked his way through college - one of the very first students at Stanford - becoming a successful engineer, and eventually the only engineer ever to become President. The World Of Young Herbert Hoover is an entertainingly written biography of his formative years that fills in some of these forgotten details with historical accuracy, and gives a glimpse of real life in the last part of the 19th century to young readers. Highly recommended for young readers aged 10 - 14 or older students who want a quick look at Hoover's youth.
