The White Sachem: The Extraordinary Life of Cape Cod's Forgotten Peacemaker: The Story of Richard Bourne and the Mashpee Wamp

The White Sachem is a narrative history of Richard Bourne and the Mashpee Wampanoag, centered on Cape Cod, Plymouth Colony, and the 1665 Mashpee land protection. Drawing on colonial records, land documents, Bourne's 1674 letter, and modern scholarship, Dr. Phillip G. Andrade presents Bourne as a complex colonial figure who helped translate Wampanoag collective consent into English legal form. The book resists both romantic legend and easy condemnation, giving proper weight to Wampanoag leaders such as Quachetasset, Paupmunnuck, and Simon Popmonet. Ideal for readers of New England local history, Native American history, church history, and colonial America.
