The History of the Wegley Family traces one branch of the family from eighteenth-century Germany through nearly three centuries of American life. The story begins with Johann Paul Wegerle, born in Lampertheim, Germany, who arrived in Philadelphia with his wife, Ottilia, and their children on September 18, 1732, aboard the Johnson Galley of London.
Their son Philip Wagerline was born in Pennsylvania in 1739 and became one of the earliest settlers associated with Brothersvalley in what is now Somerset County. Philip married Anna Dorothea Fronica Krafft, and their descendants carried the family through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and beyond as the surname gradually appeared in forms including Wagerline, Weigley, and finally Wegley.
Drawing on census records, church records, wills, land records, military documents, gravestones, photographs, and family histories, this book follows the lives of the people behind the names. The story continues through generations of farmers, settlers, laborers, craftsmen, soldiers, sailors, husbands, wives, parents, and children, ending with Raymond Edward Wegley, born in 1925.
More than a collection of names and dates, The History of the Wegley Family is an attempt to preserve the journeys, hardships, accomplishments, unanswered questions, and everyday lives of the generations who came before us. It is the story of how one German immigrant family became an American family, and how their history continued to unfold across nearly three hundred years.
