Poetry is a very personal thing. On one level, it is entirely selfish, needing only to satisfy the poet to be a success. But on another level, successful poetry reaches beyond the mind of the poet and touches others with a special kind of vision, a new way of looking at familiar things. The best poetry adds to the reader's understanding of how the world works As a literature teacher, I have always looked forward to a poetry unit. I enjoy introducing my students to the mind-expanding properties of the well-written poem. There have been many times when I have wished I could communicate with the poet directly, seeking to know what details lay behind a subject or form. This is the motivation behind what I have done with this volume of my poetry. I have offered an appendix that contains brief explanations of the choices of topics and mechanics.
