She wants something similar built for a power grid that keeps trying to tell her something, in a language nobody has ever learned to read.
The answer comes from an unlikely place: a decade of underfunded research into how trees warn each other of danger - chemical signals passed root to root, through fungal networks, long before any leaf shows visible stress. If a forest can talk, TC's engineers reason, maybe a transmission line can too. All it needs is somebody willing to build the receiver.
What they find first is a false alarm that nearly ends the program before it begins. What they find next is worse: a signature buried in nine years of maintenance records, pointing not at bad luck, but at a decision - made quietly, year after year, about which communities could wait.
As the discovery moves from a boardroom to a congressional hearing room, Christine has to decide how much the truth is actually going to cost her - and whether the company she works for is capable of surviving being honest.
