Made it easy for me to learn about and deal with my ADD

In the incredibly supportive format of the 12-step program, this book is a lovingly informative and a gentle guide to self discovery. It helped me through a very tough time of first diagnosis when I was all on my own and had only this book to turn to for answers of my many questions (even my doctor was uncertain). Even prior to launching into the steps proper, I identified with the sections on support and fellowship ("a vital component of recovery is being part of the twelve-step community"), common ADD symptoms, common ADD traits, learning the exact goals of each of the twelve steps, and discovering there were actually positive qualities of ADD. This is a thorough little book, even giving a history of the 12 step program (AA founders Bill W and Dr Bob). Each of the steps is thorough as well, complete with personal stories, exercises and reviews, as well as paragraphs on understanding, working and preparing for the step. Yes, the steps are a spiritual process, however, the relationship with God is the "God of your understanding." This is not a religious program; it is a spiritual one. Forgive me my sentimentalities, but this book was exactly what I needed when I needed it. I believe it can give others newly diagnosed with ADD the same hope and strength as well.

Best ADHD therapy

There are two core books that any adult needs for ADHD: Hallowell's Driven to Distraction (Delivered from Distraction) and this 12-step guide to ADHD. Use the Guide AND Key to 12 step ADHD together. By far the best way to manage ADHD is through a 12-step program. Over half of ADHD group members are also in AA or other 12-step recovery. These books are all you need along with a small group of motivated ADHD adults. I have suggested this as a core to the Brighton Hospital gift shop, along with Hallowell's ADHD books.

Glad to see this book is back in print.

Best available book so far, to help you start a support group in your area for adults with ADD. Based on the Twelve Steps of AA, this book adapts those steps to address typical ADD issues. Offers detailed guidance for each step, and includes suggested readings and topics for your group meeting. The appendix includes a copy of AA's Twelve Traditions. Whether you call your group Airheads Anonymous, ADDitude Adjustment, Swiss Cheese ADDs, or Knapsack Full of Bricks Group, you'll need more than a catchy name to get your group underway. This book won't do all the work for you, but it is a very useful resource. Good luck!

This book provides both the hope and the tools.

I'm in a step study group using this book as our main text. It is powerful, simple, straight ahead, informative and encouraging. If you suspect you or someone you care about has ADD, this book is a lifesaver.
