The history of the production of salt in Cheshire stretches back thousands of years and during all of that time it was concentrated in three areas - the towns of Middlewich, Nantwich and Northwich - the three 'Wiches'. Whilst the three towns have each received some attention from historians there has never been a comparative study of them in one publication detailing the early salt making processes. The three 'Wiches' have particular relevance to studies of urban history being three industrial towns of a pre-industrial age, each with complicated administrative structures - each different in its own way and yet having much in common as detailed in this book. It is hoped that this book will be of interest to those interested in Cheshire's past as well as those with the history of the salt industry.
