Whether you're new to teaching or a veteran struggling with burn-out issues, this book is for you. It's sole purpose seems to be to help us get back to what makes teaching so rewarding - the kids. I worked with The Teacher's Journey last year and it really helped. Its simple, no nonsense approach has none of the preachy condescension or overblown scholarly language so common in "self-help" books. It's organized into manageable units like Communication, Diversity and Creativity, that you can cover at your own pace and in any order you like. I especially liked the chapter on Balance. The exercises and sctivities weren't too complicated or time-consuming, and they helped me see the good things - and the not-so-good things - I was doing in my classroom. (Although some of the activities are clearly designed for teachers working in pairs or groups, I managed just fine on my own.) Finally, this book helped me do more than just think about making changes; it actually showed me how to make change happen. The whole "feel" of my classroom is getting better. I think my students are happier. I know I am!

The Teacher's Journey is ideal for any educator struggling to balance a role that extends beyond classroom instructor to master communicator, technology expert, educational psychologist and social worker. The book is packed with good sense, insightful exercises, and practical information on six crucial areas: communication, confidence, courage, balance, creativity and diversity. It's easy to understand why one teacher who used the book called it "chicken soup for the teacher's soul." Now I know what I‚m going to get all my teacher friends for Christmas!

This is an enjoyable way for every teacher to get to the core of what teaching is all about and make it work in the classroom. There are three steps in the process--examining yourself and your environment, setting goals, and applying what you learned to help your students. The process is both fun and revealing. There are a variety of activities including journaling, games, and discussion. All of this gives you great insight into how you interact with your students and helps you find new ways to improve that interaction. The book offers suggestions for using in a group format also. There are wonderful witty and inspiring quotations throughout.
