The story is about a small town lawyer in the State of Washington who decides to run as an independent candidate for the office of State Senator. His primary ideology is that the State government should live within its means. He wins the race and becomes the tie-breaking vote in an equally divided legislature. The focus of the book is not political ideology. Rather, it is about a politician who takes a firm stance on limiting government expenditures to revenues. Politicians of this nature are not unusual but in this situation the main character becomes the crucial vote in breaking a deadlock. Political ideology creeps into the story though and there are libertarian elements. The book is intended to be a short, fun read. It provides a bit of a civics lesson and also informs about practicing law in a small town. The book is rewrite of a previous book by the same author entitled "A Foot in the Door."
